How we rank privacy phones (and why)
The hierarchy is about update pipelines, exploit mitigations, and realistic usability.
The goal: fewer bad surprises
Most “privacy phone” marketing ignores the hard parts:
- security update cadence
- exploit mitigations
- compatibility pressure (which makes users bypass privacy tools)
What gets S Tier
- strong OS hardening
- fast security updates
- strong sandboxing
- broad app compatibility
Why some options rank lower
Sometimes a device is oriented around a different mission:
- Minimal phones reduce data generation, but don’t automatically create a hardened security model.
- Linux phones can be valuable, but daily-driver tradeoffs are real.
